How to Get the Most From JigSketch

Start With a Preset

The five built-in jig types (crosscut sled, tenon jig, dado jig, circle jig, and custom) set reasonable defaults for dimensions and diagram elements. Pick the one closest to what you are building, then adjust the numbers to match your actual stock and saw.

Measure Twice, Enter Once

Use a reliable tape measure or combination square. Enter the outside dimensions of your stock, not the size after trimming. If you plan to edge-join two pieces, enter the final joined size, not the individual boards.

Record the Details That Fade

The notes field is for the things you will forget: blade height above the table, which side of the line to cut on, clamp positions, or that you need to shim the fence by 1/32". Write it down now while it is fresh.

Print and Tape to the Wall

Click Print Plan to get a clean, printer-friendly page with just the diagram, cut list, and notes. Tape it near your saw or inside a cabinet door so you can find it next time.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to account for blade kerf when setting stop positions.
  • Measuring the jig after glue-up but entering the pre-assembly size.
  • Not labeling which edge is the reference edge for the fence.
  • Using the wrong stock thickness, which changes how clamps sit.

When to Rebuild Instead of Reuse

If a jig has been stored in a damp garage for a year, check it for warping before trusting it. A quick test cut on scrap will tell you more than any saved plan. Update the plan if you make changes.
